NYSGrid CI Days Workshop - December 2007

Rationale for workshop: The technologies and expertise that comprise cyberinfrastructure are becoming increasingly important for researchers, educators, and librarians across the state. In 2006, nineteen New York institutions of higher education came together in a collaboration called NYSGrid to facilitate information and technology exchange regarding cyberinfastructure, to develop an advanced technological infrastructure across the state, and to provide access to computational and data resources on a statewide grid. Nationally, cyberinfastructure experts at organizations such as the Open Science Grid, Internet2, and TeraGrid have come together to examine how they can assist universities in developing their cyberinfrastructure capabilities and have developed CI Days to promote discussion and problem solving. NYSGrid's December workshop will offer the CI Days team the opportunity to interact with a regional CI activity and will create an opportunity for institutions not yet affiliated with NYSGrid to interact with their counterparts across the state.

Goal: Create a dialogue among CI providers, NYS CI users and potential users, and NYS CI technical support staff to extend knowledge of resources and opportunities and to identify challenges that need to be addressed.

Objectives:

  • Identify cyberinfrastructure components and technical resources available to NYS institutions
  • Share experiences in the successful use of CI grids and how these successes can be replicated with NYSGrid resources
  • Gain understanding of challenges and barriers faced by institutions wanting to develop 21st century cyberinfrastructure on their campuses: identify opportunities to address these collaboratively through NYSGrid
  • Set the stage to develop a NYS CI roadmap
